Your Immigration Status Now Decides Your 2027 ACA Subsidy
From January 2027, your immigration status decides whether you get help with your marketplace bill. Who is still on the list, and what to check before November.

If you have purchased your own health insurance before, you know that it is available on a government website called the marketplace. Some people who buy such insurance also get help with the monthly bill. That help is called an ACA subsidy, and the money goes straight to the insurance company.
For 2027, the rules about who can get that help are changing. The plans stay the same, and so does the website. What changes is the list of people who can get the help.
Your immigration status is now part of that list. There is an income limit as well, which is a separate question with its own article.
Who gets the help in 2027
From January 1, 2027, the help goes to a shorter list of people:
- U.S. citizens and U.S. nationals
- Green card holders, also called lawful permanent residents
- Cuban and Haitian entrants
- People from three Pacific island nations that have treaties with the United States
The last two groups are small. For most families, the question is simply whether a green card has arrived yet.
Everyone else can still buy a plan
People here legally on other kinds of status can still buy a plan for 2027. They pay the whole monthly bill. The help goes away, and so do the lower costs at the doctor's office.
That group is bigger than it sounds. It takes in work visas, student visas, refugees, people granted asylum, and other kinds of status. Those families can still sign up, and the cost is simply the whole bill. Seeing that number early is the useful part, and the marketplace shows it while you shop.
Families are counted one person at a time
Many families hold more than one status. One parent may have a green card while the other is on a work visa. Children born here are citizens.
The marketplace looks at each person on their own. The ones who count still get the help, even when someone else in the same home does not.
One number is still shared. What the whole family earns sets the size of the help.
Three things worth doing before November
Look at your family before the plan renews. Marketplace plans renew on their own. If you are on a plan and will no longer be eligible for the subsidy, it could end up as a bill at tax time.
Check the dates on your green card or visa. The marketplace checks your status against government records. When the two do not match, it asks you for proof and gives you a deadline.
Ask what the plan costs without the help. The whole bill is the number that decides the next step for anyone losing the help. Seeing that number in November is much easier than meeting it in January.
2027 enrollment
Sign-up for 2027 runs from November 1 to January 15 in most states. For a plan that starts on January 1, sign up by December 15.
If someone you know buys their own health insurance, this is worth passing along before November.
